Dr. Rahul Sharma was quoted in Crain’s Health Pulse in 2016 regarding the future benefits of a new digital approach in the Emergency Department (ED) known as the ED Telehealth Express Care Service. He and colleagues were paving the way to utilize telemedicine in the ED in an effort to cut wait times for low-acuity patients, those patients who present to the Emergency Department with minor ailments. Since then, the new telemedicine initiative has grown and has shown positive benefits in terms of efficiency and improving the quality of a patient’s visit to the ED. Dr. Sharma and colleagues have published a paper in the NEJM Catalyst, entitled “Revolutionizing the Delivery of Care for ED Patients,” that describes the progress they have achieved with their new ED Express Care Service. The new service has garnered media attention and over 20 health systems outside of NYP/Weill Cornell have approached Dr. Sharma and team to learn more about the new system.
Dr. Sharma serves as Chief of the Division of Emergency Medicine (WDOM) and leads the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Lower Manhattan Emergency Departments, which provide advanced emergency care, 24 hours a day, to more than 140,000 patients annually.
