Message from the Emergency Physician-in-Chief
Welcome to the Division of Emergency Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Our mission is to deliver outstanding patient care, engage in cutting-edge research and provide top-ranked education.
The people and communities we serve are the heart and soul of our mission and we are committed to providing excellent care always. Our major focus is on best practices that allow our providers to spend more time with patients and thus enhance the patient-provider relationship.
The NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Emergency Department provides the most advanced emergency care, 24-hours a day, to more than 130,000 patients annually at its NYP/Weill Cornell Medical Center and NYP/Lower Manhattan Hospital campuses. Our state-of-the-art facilities are staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of emergency medicine experts that include physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, patient care facilitators, and medical scribes. We offer an ACGME accredited four year physician residency program as well as residencies for physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Our team of competent and caring physicians is fully equipped to treat any medical emergency. We have made several enhancements in workflows and processes to ensure that our patients receive the highest quality of care in an efficient manner resulting in an outstanding patient experience.
As one of the nation’s premier education and research institutions, we strive to prepare future leaders and practitioners of emergency medicine to function in a rapidly changing, increasingly diverse and extremely complex healthcare environment.
Research is also central to our core mission. We aim to continuously contribute to the scientific literature in the areas of Emergency/Critical Care, Geriatric Emergency Medicine, Global and International Health, Graduate Medical Education, and Wilderness Medicine. The division is also expanding clinical and translational research focused on the use of technology and innovation (e.g. telehealth) as part of the clinical care model. In partnership with the NYP Innovation Center, we have made great strides in telehealth including the launch of the first Emergency Department Telehealth Express Care Service in the nation as well as our NYP/Weill Cornell on demand virtual urgent care smartphone app.
We are an officially designated 911 receiving hospital, a trauma, stroke, spinal cord injury, psychiatric emergency receiving center, a chest pain center and the burn center for the City of New York. Additionally, we maintain one of the largest hospital-based ambulance services in the northeast that provides basic, advanced, and critical pediatric and adult pre-hospital care. NYP EMS is completely integrated with our emergency department and hospital care and Weill Cornell Emergency Medicine faculty provides medical supervision for all NYP EMTs and paramedics.
