Dr. Andrea Card Receives Bruce Laine Ballard, M.D. Award; Diversity Week Continues


An awards ceremony on April 15 celebrated nearly a dozen members of the Weill Cornell Medicine community for their exemplary efforts to promote diversity and inclusion.

Dr. Andrea Card, Assistant Professor in Clinical Medicine in the division of General Internal Medicine, received the Bruce Laine Ballard, M.D. Award during the Celebration of Diversity Awards on April 15. The Awards are part of Weill Cornell’s sixth annual Diversity Week.

The Bruce Laine Ballard, M.D. Award is presented to a faculty member who demonstrates a commitment to improving student life and to fostering a nurturing and supportive environment in which students of all backgrounds can thrive. Dr. Card is currently the Diversity Center of Excellence’s Faculty Lead for Pre-Medical Diversity Initiatives.

Diversity Week kicked off Monday with a warm welcome from Dean Robert Harrington. Keynote speakers included Dr. Thomas LaVeist, Dean, Weatherhead Chair, & Professor, Tulane University, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, who delivered the Elizabeth Wilson-Anstey Diversity Week Keynote on April 15 entitled, "My Journey to Discover Why African Americans Live Sicker and Die Younger." On April 16,
Dr. C. Noel Bairey Merz, Irwin and Sheila Allen Chair in Women’s Heart Research and Professor of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and Director of the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center at the Smidt Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, delivered the Women in Medicine and Science diversity week keynote titled “Sex and Gender Medicine: Science, Policy and Health Disparities in CVD.” Both sessions are recorded.
