All residents receive training in core teaching and leadership skills throughout residency, including setting expectations, establishing a positive learning climate, teaching on rounds, best practices in feedback delivery, and assisting learners in need. This content is delivered during noon conferences, outpatient academic time, and resident retreats, with multiple opportunities for skills practice over the three years of residency.
Residents seeking additional opportunities to develop their teaching skills can participate in the Medical Education Elective as a PGY2 or PGY3. This two-week elective provides in-depth reviews of core resident-as-teacher topics, opportunities for observation and feedback on teaching skills, and professional development for residents planning to pursue careers as clinician educators. The elective is organized by Dr. Josh Davis and features speakers who serve as educational leaders throughout the institution.
Residents who have demonstrated a commitment to medical education may elect to participate in the Medical Education Pathway. Participating residents maintain a teaching portfolio of their educational endeavors, including direct teaching, professional development, and educational scholarship. On review of their portfolios, outstanding resident educators are awarded the Distinction in Medical Education upon graduation. The Medical Education Pathway is run by Dr. Laura Greisman and Dr. Shira Sachs.
Finally, each year a group of PGY3 residents are nominated by their peers to serve as Assistant Chief Residents. This is a month-long rotation during which residents work alongside the Chief Medical Residents to facilitate Morning Report in addition to other educational conferences.
