Information for Applicants

Thank you for your interest in the Rheumatology Division Fellowship Program within the Weill Department of Medicine. The rheumatology fellowship is based at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). Physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency may apply to the program. The HSS rheumatology training program offers in-depth clinical practice and research training. Interdisciplinary by definition, the program benefits from close collaboration between orthopedists, rheumatologists, and other healthcare professionals, in clinical care as well as research. Graduates are eligible for subspecialty board certification in rheumatology.

The program, designed for three fellows each year, is flexible enough to allow for individual fellows' interests and needs. The program benefits from the rich and varied patient populations found at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and HSS, as well as the surrounding community in the New York tristate area.

The first year of the program is predominantly clinical. In the second and third years of fellowship, trainees devote half of their time to clinical or basic science research, supervised by a faculty mentor. Options for formal work leading to advanced degrees in health services research are available. All fellows are expected to present the results of their research at regional and national meetings.

Our Fellowship Program participates in the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

Applications should be submitted to ERAS and must include:

  • A medical school transcript
  • A personal statement
  • 3-5 letters of recommendation, including one from the Program Director
  • Licensure information
  • A photograph
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Medical Students Performance Evaluation (MSPE) – Dean's Letter

For more information, please contact the Department of Academic Training at HSS, by phone: (212) 606-1466, fax: (212) 606-1477, or via email.

We look forward to receiving your application!

Sincerely,

Anne R. Bass, M.D.
