Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship

The Advanced Endoscopy [Interventional] Fellowship is a one-year training program designed for physicians who have completed a three-year, ABIM-certified Gastroenterology Fellowship. This fourth-year program provides fellows with the cognitive and technical expertise necessary to perform endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), third-space endoscopy, endobariatrics, and other advanced endoscopic procedures at an expert level. The program aims to train future leaders in academic endoscopy, both in the United States and internationally. To apply, please visit the ASGE Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship (AEF) website.

The Weill Cornell Medicine Gastroenterology Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship, directed by Dr. Reem Z. Sharaiha, offers a comprehensive therapeutic endoscopy training program for physicians pursuing advanced endoscopic expertise and an academic career. While general endoscopic training is included in a standard three-year gastroenterology fellowship, the rapid evolution of advanced techniques has created a growing need for specialized training in this field.

Our fellowship provides hands-on experience in advanced endoscopic techniques and opportunities to contribute to clinical research. Fellows benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge technology, and mentorship from an expert faculty.

Curriculum

Fellows receive extensive training in a wide range of advanced procedures, including:

  • ERCP
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic EUS
  • Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)
  • Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)
  • Deep enteroscopy techniques
  • Ablation therapy for Barrett’s esophagus
  • Confocal laser endomicroscopy
  • Third-space endoscopy, including peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) and its variations (G-POEM, Z-POEM)
  • Transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF)
  • Endoscopic management of bariatric surgery complications
  • Primary endoscopic bariatric therapies

Fellows will train alongside faculty members in a one-on-one setting, gaining direct mentorship from experts, including Dr. David Carr-Locke, Dr. Srihari Mahadev, Dr. Kartik Sampath, and Dr. Mark Hanscom.

Clinical Research

Fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in the division’s ongoing research initiatives and present their findings at regional and national conferences.
