Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship

The Division of Cardiology at Weill Cornell Medical College offers an advanced training fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The Electrophysiology Service has a high volume of clinical activities related to all aspects of arrhythmia evaluation and treatment. The service comprises five attending electrophysiologists, assisted by nurse practitioners in the device clinic, nurse practitioners on the inpatient service, and research support staff.

The fellowship consists of two years devoted to intensive training in all aspects of invasive electrophysiology. A core curriculum in electrophysiology is taught throughout the year by the full-time faculty. Fellows are trained in mapping and ablation of complex arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, atrial tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia. They attain expertise in device implantation and management, with emphasis on implantable defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization.

Rotations

The core of the fellowship consists of rotations in the invasive electrophysiology laboratory, in which fellows perform electrophysiology and device-related procedures. In addition, fellows rotate through the device clinic as well as the outpatient and inpatient consultations.

Research

The laboratory has active basic and clinical research programs, and fellows are expected to participate in projects with the goal of presenting at national meetings and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Research interests in the electrophysiology laboratory include cellular electrophysiology and clinical features of idiopathic ventricular tachycardia; mechanisms and pharmacology of atrial arrhythmias; nonlinear dynamics and mathematical control of arrhythmias; selection of patients for resynchronization and prediction of outcome; interaction of heart failure with arrhythmias; and risk stratification for sudden cardiac death. In addition to these areas of research, the laboratory participates in numerous multicenter clinical trials.
