Dr. Brown Appointed as Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

The Weill Department of Medicine (WDOM) is pleased to announce that Robert S. Brown, Jr., M.D., M.P.H. has been appointed as the new Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology effective August 1, 2021. Dr. Brown is the co-founder and Director of the bi-campus Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He has been an integral part of the liver transplant effort at Weill Cornell since 1999 and joined the faculty full-time in 2015. The liver transplant program has the best outcomes and among the largest volume in the region and is a pioneer in laparoscopic living liver donation. The Gladys and Roland Harriman Professor of Medicine and Clinical Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Dr. Brown has worked with Dr. David E. Cohen to double the size of the clinical and research faculty of the division. He also led the expansion into the new David H. Koch Center building. Dr Brown has served as Vice Chair for Mentorship and Academic Development and as Chair of the Promotions and Appointment Review Committee in the WDOM.

Dr. Brown received his B.A. from Harvard College, M.D. from New York University, and M.P.H. from the Graduate School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley. He completed his internal medicine training at Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, and a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of California, San Francisco. He has a long history of NIH-funded clinical research on viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, and liver transplantation. He has co-authored more than 200 papers in the peer-reviewed journals and serves as the current Editor-in-Chief of Liver Transplantation. Dr. Brown is the recipient of a Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Transplant Physicians, the Senior Attending Teacher Award from Columbia University Medical Center, and the American Liver Foundation New York Chapter's Physician of the Year.

Dr. Brown succeeds David E. Cohen, M.D., Ph.D., who will be serving as the new Chief of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The WDOM thanks Dr. Cohen for his years of outstanding service as the WDOM’s Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
