With stewardship provided by the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the Weill Department of Medicine recently received a donation from New York Cardiology Associates that has enabled iPads to be distributed to every resident training in internal medicine. It's part of a large initiative to enhance the learning environment in the age of information.

In September, 20 core faculty members were invited to the iFaculty Workshop where Dr. Lia Logio, Vice Chair for Education, in conjunction with healthcare education experts from Apple, demonstrated how these devices can powerfully affect learning. The faculty have now been working on developing a tremendously rich repository of important learning tools that are delivered via the iPads. "The residents are thrilled to have iPads. They will enable them to have much easier access to knowledge and will facilitate both their clinical work as well as their on-the-fly learning. This wonderful donation has helped us provide state-of-the-art tools for training our residents," says Dr. Logio.

New York Cardiology Associates has supported the motto of "putting patients first" for many years, and, this year, with the assistance of Dr. Orli Etingin, Director, Iris Cantor Women's Health Center and the department's Vice Chair for Faculty, and Susan Mascitelli, Senior Vice-President, Patient Services & Liaison to the Board of Trustees, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, their gift was targeted for the area of internal medicine education. Thanks to the generosity of New York Cardiology Associates, residents-in-training are now seen on the patient floors, in libraries, and in classrooms, actively utilizing their new iPads. "The addition of iPads in support of our educational mission is simply invaluable," says Dr. Choi, the Sanford I. Weill Chairman of the Weill Department of Medicine.

Leased from Apple for a three-year period during the residents' training, the iPads are linked to the network with educational applications (apps) that facilitate learning and connectivity. Some of the featured apps include "eClicker," an audience response system and "Explain Everything," a white board that can be annotated by voice recordings. In the coming months, the residency program hopes to fully engage the faculty and residents into collaborative learning in the various conferences and academic endeavors.
