Proving the Positive Affect: Dr. Charlson Leads Multi-Million NHLBI Study

In a randomized, controlled study of 756 patients, Dr. Mary Charlson created and utilized a script to provide patients with a tool to "fulfill their promise to themselves that they will do what's needed for their health." The results have been published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Physician-Scientists Chart Connection Between Testosterone Therapy and Polycythemia Among HIV-Infected Patients

A study in the journal AIDS identifies a connection between the use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) and the blood disorder polycythemia among HIV-infected men. This is the first study on polycythemia in HIV-infected men and has led to additional recommendations for the treatment of patients with HIV.

Gratitude and Grace for Dr. August

An authority on preeclampsia (a hypertensive disorder that may occur during pregnancy), Dr. Phyllis August will receive a "Saving Grace" award at the Preeclampsia Foundation's 7th annual gala. Dr. August has also played a pivotal role in putting the condition of preeclampsia on the map. Preeclampsia is a leading cause of mother and baby mortality in pregnant women.

Department of Medicine in Partnership with Cayuga Medical Center

The partnership program gives WCMC medical students the opportunity to conduct a six-week primary care clerkship in Ithaca in which they shadow local physicians. WCMC students are afforded clinical experience that would be atypical at Manhattan hospitals such as managing mononucleosis on a university campus, or conducting family medicine in rural villages and farms.

Dr. Lachs Testifies at Senate Hearing on Elder Abuse

Dr. Mark S. Lachs is part of an expert panel convened by the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging to testify on nationwide trends of elder abuse. The hearing, Justice for All: Ending Elder Abuse, Neglect and Financial Exploitation, will take place today in Washington, DC, and will include personal testimony from actor and abuse survivor Mickey Rooney.

Dr. Hall-Ross Named Physician of the Year by Department of Nursing

Dr. Lachs Publishes New Book: Treat Me, Not My Age

As the aging population of the United States continues to grow, patients and caregivers are coming face-to-face with a widespread but largely overlooked problem. Medical ageism often results in a patient's ailments going untreated or being overtreated. Because their symptoms are dismissed as "just part of getting older," such discrimination of the elderly extends throughout the healthcare system, disproportionately affecting the quality of life for elderly patients.
