Dr. Clement Richard Boland, Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the University of San Diego, received the Charles Maltz, M.D., Ph.D. Excellence in Teaching Award by the division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology in the Weill Department of Medicine during a special reception Feb. 12.

The award is bestowed in memory of Dr. Charles Maltz, a faculty member in the division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology for nearly 30 years. A pillar within the Weill Department of Medicine, Dr. Maltz was widely published and made key research contributions in all areas of gastrointestinal disease. In addition to his exceptional clinical expertise and research contributions, Dr. Maltz was a renowned educator, training generations of gastroenterologists who carry on his legacy to this day.

“Charlie had a lasting impact on our trainees and faculty over his tenure here,” said Dr. Robert Brown, Jr., Chief of the division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology. “He was a consummate clinician, teacher, and Renaissance man with a wealth of knowledge across all of gastroenterology. Our division felt it was important to recognize his contribution to generations of gastroenterologists with a lecture by someone in our field who also demonstrated a lifelong commitment to learning and teaching.” Dr. Boland was chosen from top visiting faculty to Weill Cornell Medicine who embody that profound dedication to patient care and education. Earlier that day, he delivered his Grand Round titled “The Genetic Basis of Polyp Formation in the Colon.” Watch our video of Dr. Boland expressing his gratitude for the recognition.

“Even though my career has mainly focused on research, I’ve always taken teaching and patient care very seriously,” Dr. Boland said. Early in his career, Dr. Boland served in the Department of Health and Human Services’ Indian Health Service, the federal health program of American Indians and Alaska Natives. “It’s a real honor to be honored by [the memory] of Dr. Maltz, who had these important skillsets I consider very highly,” he added.

The inaugural Charles Maltz, M.D., Ph.D. Excellence in Teaching Award was given last year to Dr. John Inadomi, a gastroenterologist from the University of Utah Health with expertise in comparative effectiveness research, which compares different health care interventions to determine which are most effective for a specific patient population or condition.
