The Suthanthiran Laboratory's innovative discovery to determine acute rejection in the kidney transplant (by measuring three genes in the urine), and ultimately reducing the need of a kidney transplant biopsy, was selected as one of Top 10 Outstanding Clinical Research Achievements in the U.S. by the Clinical Research Forum.

The Clinical Research Forum is an organization comprised of the nation's most prestigious and acclaimed academic medical centers, professional organizations, and industry whose goal is to sustain and expand a cadre of talented, well-trained clinical investigators at all stages of career development, as well as support nurturing environments and comprehensive research capabilities within academic institutions. Its mission is to provide leadership to the national clinical and translational research enterprise, and promote understanding and clinical research support and its impact on health and healthcare.

Dr. Manikkam Suthanthiran's paper, Urinary-Cell mRNA Profile and Acute Cellular Rejection in Kidney AllograftsNew England Journal of Medicine, was recognized by the CRF as one of the top 10 outstanding clinical research achievements in the United States. Dr. Suthanthiran received this recognition at the CRF's Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner held in Washington D.C. in April 2014. The urinary cell mRNA profiling study was recognized earlier by the National Institute of Health (NIH) – the primary sponsor of the study – as one of America's pioneering discoveries.
