Dr. Robert S. Brown, Jr.
The Weill Department of Medicine has appointed Dr. Robert S. Brown, Jr. to serve as Vice Chair for Mentorship and Academic Development as of July 1, 2018. Dr. Brown is currently the Vice Chair of Transitions of Care and Clinical Director for the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, as well as the Director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. In his new role as Vice Chair for Mentorship and Academic Development, Dr. Brown will continue to provide expertise as a Clinical Director while developing programs in faculty development across all of the department’s missions. It is expected that Dr. Brown’s longstanding record of outstanding service in both the clinical and research realms will ensure the growth and success of future faculty development including a wide range of initiatives.
Dr. Brown, the Gladys and Roland Harriman Professor of Medicine, obtained his M.D. from New York University and holds an M.P.H. from the Graduate School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley. He served his residency training at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, and completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of California, San Francisco. Heavily involved in clinical research, Dr. Brown has been part of the liver transplant effort at Weill Cornell part-time since 1999 and joined the faculty full-time in 2015.
An internationally recognized expert in liver disease and liver transplantation, Dr. Brown has co-authored more than 170 peer-reviewed articles, mostly dedicated to viral hepatitis and liver transplantation; serves as an Associate Editor for Hepatology and Gastroenterology and Hepatology; and published the book, Liver Diseases and Transplantation: An Algorithmic Approach to Work-up and Management. Dr. Brown was the recipient of the Senior Attending Teacher Award from Columbia University Medical Center and the American Liver Foundation New York Chapter's Physician of the Year Award.
