Successful GME Diversity Welcome Back Held at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center


Sponsored by the Diversity Center of Excellence of the Cornell Center for Health Equity, Weill Department of Medicine (WDOM) and the Minority Housestaff Committee, and NYP’s Graduate Medical Education office, a Graduate Medical Education Diversity Welcome Back was held on January 19, 2019 for residency applicants to programs across NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. The event, presented in the Weill Auditorium, was co-chaired by Drs. Ruslan Gracia and Dario Villamar of the WDOM’s Minority Housestaff Committee.

For the initial welcome session, Dr. Susana Morales, Vice Chair of Diversity and Director of the Diversity Center of Excellence and Dr. Anthony Hollenberg, Chair, Weill Department of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, spoke of our institutional commitment to high quality graduate medical education, diversity in medicine, and commitment to health equity. Speakers also included leaders from NYPH/Weill Cornell, including Drs. Joy Howell, Vice Chair for Diversity in the Department of Pediatrics and Fellowship Director, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine; Gerald M. Loughlin, Pediatrician-in-Chief, NYP; Francis S. Lee, Chair and Psychiatrist-in-Chief; and Linnie Golightly, Associate Dean, Office of Diversity and Inclusion; as well as Lauren Wasson, the Designated Institutional Official for Graduate Medical Education at NYP.

Informative panel sessions were held for the residency applicants covering career development as well as questions and answers regarding numerous medical specialties and the training experience. Speakers included residency program directors, housestaff, fellows, and key faculty.
