On June 4, 2015, the Weill Department of Medicine hosted a retirement party at Griffis Faculty Club for Ralph L. Nachman, M.D., who had served as the department's chairman for two decades. From far and wide, colleagues, friends and family were in attendance to celebrate Dr. Nachman's extraordinary career as a physician, scientist, mentor, and administrator. Speeches were given by those who have worked closely with Dr. Nachman and/or had been trained by him at Weill Cornell.
The Employee Recognition Review Committee (R3) of the Weill Department of Medicine completed its bimonthly review of all nominees, and three "superstar" winners were announced: Sarah Ahmad, Program Specialist, and Sarah Schneider, ANP-BC, Staff Associate/Nurse Practitioner, both from the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, and Lisette Torres, Senior Patient Coordinator, Division of Cardiology.

The Weill Department of Medicine is focused on increasing its research footprint both at Weill Cornell and on a national level. To that end, the department has established a mentoring infrastructure to assist junior faculty during their transition to NIH K and R series grants. This infrastructure supports a monthly meeting that seeks to build, promote, and mentor the department's junior faculty.

Weill Cornell Medical College has named its department of medicine the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Department of Medicine. The naming is in recognition of the Weills’ recent $100 million gift – which also established the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Center for Metabolic Health – and honors the couple’s longstanding dedication to the medical college.
Dr. Andrew I. Schafer is an expert in the research and treatment of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) and a world-renowned physician-scientist in hematology and medical oncology. As Director of the Richard T. Silver, MD, Myeloproliferative Neoplasm Center, he will manage both the biomedical research and clinical activities surrounding MPNs.
