Weill Cornell Medical College has named its department of medicine the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Department of Medicine. The naming is in recognition of the Weills’ recent $100 million gift – which also established the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Center for Metabolic Health – and honors the couple’s longstanding dedication to the medical college.
Dr. Andrew I. Schafer is an expert in the research and treatment of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) and a world-renowned physician-scientist in hematology and medical oncology. As Director of the Richard T. Silver, MD, Myeloproliferative Neoplasm Center, he will manage both the biomedical research and clinical activities surrounding MPNs.
The new winners were Deanna Joa, Senior Medical Secretary, Anna Quinones, Senior Medical Secretary, and Susan Daniel, Clinical Technician.
Dr. Fernando J. Martinez has been named the Executive Vice Chair of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He will work closely with the department and divisional leadership, as well as with all faculty members of the DOM to provide the highest quality patient care, best education and training of our medical students, residents and fellows, and to unravel discoveries in research endeavors.
On December 2, 2013, the DoM hosted a party at the Griffis Faculty Club to celebrate the department's voluntary physicians. Dr. Augustine M.K. Choi, Chairman of the Department of Medicine, welcomed the guests and gave remarks in which he thanked the voluntary staff for their invaluable efforts in support of all of the department's missions, including the active role they play in the training and mentoring of a next generation of physician-scientists.
Celebrating the first year of the newly launched Star Performer Employee Recognition Program, the DoM hosted a party at the Griffis Faculty Club on November 7. All Star Performers and Super Star Winners, who were announced over the past year, were honored in speeches given by members of the Results, Rewards & Recognition Committee.
