The Employee Recognition Review Committee (R3) of the Department of Medicine (DOM) completed its first bimonthly review of all nominees. The program, which honors outstanding service by DOM employees, named Nadine Miranda, Senior Patient Coordinator, Iris Cantor Women's Center, as the top "Star Performer" of this first review cycle.
The seed grants are an outgrowth of the Department of Medicine's Strategic Plan, intended to catalyze and encourage the pilot-testing of bold, creative and "high impact but high risk" research projects that involve new directions and new interdisciplinary collaboration by the Principal Investigator. The goal is to support the growth of high-impact research in the Department of Medicine that will result in major new support from the NIH.
Dr. Barbara Hempstead, a physician-scientist for more than two decades, has dedicated her career to the mentorship of students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. She is the newly appointed Associate Dean for Faculty Development.
John P. Leonard, M.D., the Richard T. Silver Distinguished Professor of Hematology and Medical Oncology, has been appointed Vice Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Medicine and that David J. Christini, Ph.D., Professor of Medicine (in Cardiology) has been appointed Vice Chair for Basic Research in the Department.
Dr. Carla Boutin-Foster has been named Assistant Dean for Faculty Diversity. She has long-championed faculty recruitment and development, and research endeavors, in support of diversity within the Weill Cornell community.
Dr. Joseph Fins has been named as the first endowed chair for the E. William Davis, Jr., M.D. Professorship in Medical Ethics. A thought leader in medical ethics, a scholarly researcher, a superb physician and teacher, and an accomplished administrator, his career has remained on an upward trajectory as he consistently exemplifies the highest level of ethical standards in medicine.
The endowed professorship recognizes Dr. Logio's outstanding leadership in medical education and administration, as well as her innovations in education, patient safety and faculty development. Previous to joining Weill Cornell, she served as Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Indiana University School of Medicine, where she was also Assistant Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development.
Dr. David Calfee serves as the new Chief Hospital Epidemiologist at NYP/Weill Cornell. Dr. Stephen Wilson is a new Hospital Epidemiologist. Thomas Walsh, M.D. is the new Director of the Transplantation-Oncology Infectious Diseases Program.
Mary K. Crow, M.D., has been appointed Chief of the Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine. She has been concurrently appointed Physician-In-Chief and Chair of the Division of Rheumatology at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). Dr. Crow is an internationally recognized investigator and a leader in the field of rheumatology and autoimmunity research and clinical practice.
Lia Logio, M.D., has been appointed Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine and Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. She currently serves as Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Indiana University School of Medicine, where she is also the Assistant Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development.
