Dr. Pitt Appointed to Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI)

Dr. Geoffrey Pitt
After a national search, Dr. Geoffrey Stuart Pitt has been appointed to Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CRVI) at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Pitt will be joining the Maurice R. and Corinne P. Greenberg Division of Cardiology as the Ida and Theo Rossi Distinguished Professor of Medicine in the Weill Department of Medicine in July of 2016. He will lead and direct the basic and translational research program focused on cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular sciences.

Dr. Patterson Receives 2015 Distinguished Scientist Award from the ACC

The award, which recognizes major contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge, was presented to Dr. Patterson at the College's 64th Annual Scientific Session. Dr. Patterson, a Professor of Medicine in the Weill Department of Medicine (WDOM), is the newly recruited Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Weill Department of Medicine Fosters a New Generation of Investigators

The Weill Department of Medicine is focused on increasing its research footprint both at Weill Cornell and on a national level. To that end, the department has established a mentoring infrastructure to assist junior faculty during their transition to NIH K and R series grants. This infrastructure supports a monthly meeting that seeks to build, promote, and mentor the department's junior faculty.

Division of Cardiology Begins Investigator-Initiated Multicenter Study to Study Cardiac Device

Atrial high rate episodes have been associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart failure and death. The study, which officially began in July 2014, has already enrolled six subjects and has recruited multiple leading centers across the United States to participate.

In over 90 clinical scenarios of patients commonly seen by physicians with possible coronary artery disease, nuclear imaging, echo, CTA, exercise stress testing, MR, and angiography were compared against each other for the most appropriate approach for patient care.

Drs. Oren A. Friedman and James M. Horowitz, Division of Pulmonary-Critical Care and Cardiology respectively, have recently published a paper in Endovascular Today (July 2013) on building a pulmonary embolism multidisciplinary team.

Department Physicians Elected to Institute of Medicine

David J. Skorton, M.D., President of Cornell University and a member of the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, and Joseph J. Fins, M.D., Chief of Weill Cornell's Division of Medical Ethics and an Attending Physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine.
